Overcoming Creative Block – The Creative Mind, It’s Time to Fight Back!
November 13, 2008 | 1 Comment
Many of the greatest artists in human history have
complained about periods when they just were unable to create anything
that they could be happy with. The depression states of some creative
minds has been well-documented, but certainly not all creative minds
have long-periods of depression between their hyper creative states.

Some
folks feel as if creative people are mental basket cases but in reality
this is not the norm. Perhaps these creativity psyche myths have been
purported far too often. If you discuss the creative blocks that
artists, writers and strategic planners often go through, those seem to
be real to them, even if they seem ridiculous to others. Indeed, most
people cannot hold a candle to the 1-2% creative super-stars of
humanity.
Writers who experience writer’s block tell us that they
get over it by writing, writing what you ask? Well, just writing about
anything, soon they are back in the groove and can go back to the task
of finishing a masterpiece short story, play or even another chapter in
a future award winning novel. Writer’s block is really only one such
creative block that the most creative amongst us have to deal with.
Painters,
Sculptures, Surfers, and Designers all understand these challenges and
like pain, it does not seem real to us observing, but it is very real
to them, they can feel it. It has been my experience in studying highly
creative people that creative block can be overcome by slowly immersing
yourself in the area of creativity you want to enter.
This means
if you are a sculptor start playing around with clay or pick up a
chisel and just draw a happy face, same with an artist, draw a happy
face and for a designer draw a happy face shaped car, airplane, or
house or whatever object it is you are wishing to design. Try it, it
works!
