Are Daily Affirmations Just Empty Words?
July 11, 2009 | Leave a Comment
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” That
schoolyard chant is a dreadful lie, and we all know it. Hurtful words may not
leave a mark on your skin, but they cut deeply into your heart and soul. People
who were verbally abused as children carry those hurtful words inside them, and
it affects them on a subconscious level.

Contrariwise, words of affection and love have an equally powerful effect.
They can make you feel warm all over and put a sparkle in your eye. Words can
also challenge our beliefs and make us think. Words have made people like Mark
Twain, Emily Dickinson, and Ernest Hemingway practically immortal.
Do you see why it’s ridiculous to claim that daily affirmations don’t work
because they’re “just words”? Words may not have shape or form, but they are
powerful. Words are just one of the tools we use to express our thoughts. And we
cannot rationally deny the power of thought. A great tower does not simply come
into being: Before it was built, before it was planned out on paper, it began as
no more than a thought in someone’s head.
Positive affirmations are a way to retrain your mind and change your focus.
It’s about using the power of your thoughts to manifest the kind of life you
want. All action begins with a thought or impulse. And this is why people who
are constantly plagued by negative thoughts and low self esteem never seem to
get anywhere–their thoughts don’t encourage it.
Before you can effectively change your behavior (and by extension your life),
you need to change your thinking. Daily affirmations will help you do
that.
